About Our Farm

COW COMFORT: 5 rotating brushes offer the cows a back scratch whenever they desire. Each stall is outfitted with a waterbed topped with fresh bedding to provide the best comfort possible when our cows are lying down.

Natural light and air ventilation in the free stall barns keeps the animals healthy, clean and content.

HEALTH: Animal health and comfort are always our top priority. We work under the guidance of a veterinarian to assure that we have an effective preventative health care and treatment policy.

MILKING: There are 300 cows on our farm that provide over 2,000 gallons of milk, 365 days of the year. The milk is picked up every day and delivered to nearby processing plants for making into butter, cheese and fluid drinking milk and sold locally in the Northeast.

Our dairy farm is the first in the state of Connecticut to install a robotic milking system. Beginning in March 2015, our cows now choose their milking routine using the 5 Lely Astronaut robots. Our cows visit the robot on average 3 times/day with each visit taking approximately 6.5 minutes. Each cow spends just 20 minutes/day being milked with the remainder of her time spent lying, eating and socializing.

DIET: A robotic feed pusher, ‘Juno’, passes through the barn every hour to help keep the feed within reach of the cow throughout the day and night. The cows have 24 hour access to high quality feeds and fresh water.

We grow all of our own forages to feed our cows and work closely with a dairy cow nutritionist to ensure we are providing our animals with a complete and balanced diet. Our forages are supplemented by grains and nutritional byproducts to meet our cows dietary needs.

Freund’s Farm participates in the National Dairy FARM Program: Farmers Assuring Responsible Management is a nationwide, verifiable animal well-being program that provides consistency and uniformity to best practices in animal care and quality assurance in the dairy industry. The program aims to provide a consistent platform for animal well-being, which producers can use to evaluate their on-farm animal care practices. Third-party verification ensures the validity and the integrity of the program to our customers and consumers. The dairy industry has an excellent track record of responsible management practices; this national effort simply brings consistency and uniformity to on-farm care and provides reassurance to consumers.
