Freund’s Farm awarded for sustainability efforts

EAST CANAAN >> CowPots, the biodegradable planting containers crafted from manure byproducts, put the Freund family on the map, but the idea of sustainability permeates every facet of the the family farm operation.

Efforts at the dairy farm include pasture boundaries that protect the Blackberry river, a 535-panel solar array, a digester that converts methane from cow manure to biogas and a greenhouse structure that lets in natural light and helps keep some 275 Holsteins cool when it comes to the midnight and noon-time milkings.

“We’re part of the equation about what’s going on in the environment and we take that seriously,” said Amanda Freund.
